HANCOCK COUNTY — Two more residents have died of COVID-19, raising the county’s total to 188 as cases spike higher than the surge earlier this fall.

One of the fatalities was in their 40s, and the other in their 50s, according to information from the Indiana Department of Health. One was a man and the other was a woman. The deaths occurred on Dec. 6 and 7.

Hancock County’s seven-day moving average of COVID-19 cases continues to trend upward, rising to 67 late last week. The county reported 106 cases on Dec. 8, the most in a single day since January. Indiana reflects a similar upward trend. The spikes come as COVID-19’s omicron variant sparks concerns worldwide, although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report most such cases in the U.S. so far have resulted in mild illness. Omicron has not yet been detected in Indiana, but scientists suggest it’s a matter of time.
