Prep Roundup: Dragons finished third at East Central

ST. LEON — The New Palestine swimming teams competed at Saturday’s East Central Relays, with the Dragons boys finishing third and the girls fourth.

The boys tallied 64 points, finishing behind East Central (94) and Greenwood (74). The Dragons finished ahead of Connersville (28) and Rising Sun (12).

The Dragons girls tallied 46 points. Greenwood (76), East Central (66) and Connersville (58) took the top three spots. The Dragons finished ahead of Rising Sun (26).

The Dragons won one event, as Ashton Turner, Liam Fuller, Dontae Thompson and Ben Miesse won the 200-yard free relay in 1 minutes, 40.55 seconds.

Turner, Quincy Shirk, Miesse and Thompson were second in the 375 crescendo relay. Dawson Lynch, Eli Kleine and Shirk were second in the 150 backstroke relay. Thompson, Jack Kleiman and Aidan Kingery finished second in the 150 breaststroke relay.

For the Dragons girls, Hanna Stone, Katelyn Trimpe, Chloe Siler and Sullie Leavell were second in the 375 crescendo relay. Siler, Olivia Melangton, Trimpe and Leavell were second in the 200 free relay.

Marauders place at Pike Invite

The Mt. Vernon swimming teams competed at the Pike Invite on Saturday, with the boys finishing fourth and the girls eighth.

The boys tallied 231 points, placing behind Franklin Central (376.5), Harrison (358.5) and Avon (326). Crawfordsville (224) was fifth ahead of Greenwood (177), Seymour (176), Lebanon (165) and Pike (87).

The girls amassed 139.5 points to finish ahead of Lebanon (130). Franklin Central was first with 377 points, tying Harrison (377). Avon was third at 285. Greenwood (262.5), Pike (222), Crawfordsville (196) and Seymour (170) filled out the top seven.

Wrestling

Cougars take third at invite

The Greenfield-Central boys wrestling team won three of five matches on Saturday to finish third overall during the Perry Meridian Falcon Duals.

The Cougars defeated Lawrence North 51-24, Perry JV 70-3 and 11th-ranked Oldham County (Ky.) 34-33.

Greenfield-Central lost to No. 11 Columbus East 51-15 and to No. 9 Perry Meridian 53-15.

Columbus East won the duals, followed by Perry Meridian. Oldham County was fourth. Lawrence North was fifth.

Individually, Chase Gardner was the lone unbeaten Cougar on the day, going 5-0 at 170 pounds. Brayden Flener went 4-1 at 285.

Lincoln Parsons (113), Nate Miller (120), Dakota Herald (126) and Clay Guenin (160) each finished 3-2.

The Cougars are now 12-6 on the season and are currently 3-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

Dragons compete at Roncalli

The New Palestine wrestling team competed Saturday at the Roncalli Duals. The Dragons went 1-2, with one loss by tiebreaker and one to a ranked team.

In their first match, the Dragons tied Noblesville 39-39. The decision went to the ninth tiebreaker criteria, awarding Noblesville the victory on most first points.

The Dragons beat Seymour 57-18 before falling to No. 17 Roncalli 62-12.

Cole Vandygriff was 3-0 at 106 pounds, including a win over state-ranked Matthew Rossman of Roncalli. Chris Bullock went 3-0, with two wins at 120 and one by fall over Noblesville at 126.

Jaedyn Jeffries went 2-1 with a pair of come-from-behind victories. Juan Camacho also went 2-1, with his lone defeat a 2-1 overtime loss to a ranked wrestler, Roncalli’s Justin Lewis.

Bryce Doss also went 2-1, with his lone loss also coming in a close 4-2 decision to 17th-ranked Brayden Getz of Roncalli. Jacob Tweedy went 1-2, but had one match in double OT and another by one point, both against ranked opponents. Trase Quillen and Jeffries each earned their first career varsity wins.

The Dragons are now 4-7 on the season.
