Mt. Vernon’s Trevino, Rush run strong at IHSAA cross-country state finals

TERRE HAUTE — Mt. Vernon’s Tristan Trevino and Austin Rush made their first-career individual boys cross-country state finals appearance on Saturday afternoon and finished in the event’s top 100 out of more than 200 runners.

Trevino, a junior, placed 77th overall, while Rush, a senior, crossed the finish line in 89th at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

Brebeuf Jesuit won the boys team state title on Saturday with a score of 78, followed by Hamilton Southeastern (117), Columbus North (136), Fishers (142), Carmel (157) and Center Grove (164) in the top six.

Columbus North’s Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff won the boys individual state championship in a time of 15 minutes, 22.6 seconds. Angola’s Izaiah Steury was second in 15:23.8. Brebeuf Jesuit’s Krishna Thirunavukkarasu took third in 15:26.3.

Trevino just missed out on the top 75 by six-tenths of a second with a time of 16:42.7. Zionsville’s Ryan Handy finished ahead of Trevino for 76th in 16:42.1 behind Center Grove’s Raef Sauer, who was 75th in 16:42.1.

Rush finished the race in a time of 16:49.9.

During the Shelbyville Semistate the weekend prior, Trevino placed 27th overall in a time of 16:09.9, and Rush was 29th in 16:11.1.

The duo captured the semistate event’s ninth and 10th spots among those individuals that didn’t advance as part of a state-qualifying team.

Trevino and Rush became the Mt. Vernon boys cross-country program’s first state qualifiers since Christian Noble and Aaron Rush in 2015 when both runners earned all-state honors as seniors by placing fourth and 19th, respectively.

The girls team state title was awared to Columbus North (79) with Carmel (92) in second and Chesterton (221) in third.

Indianapolis Bishop Chatard’s Lily Cridge won the girls individial state title in a time of 17:32.7.
