Under sunny skies that made it feel more like mid-summer than early fall, the Riley Festival made its much-anticipated return during the weekend after the 2020 event was canceled because of the pandemic. It was just like old times: Thousands of people descended on downtown Greenfield for the 51st edition of the state’s largest four-day street festival, enjoying concerts, crafts and food. Hundreds of photography, fine arts and home arts entries in the festival’s extensive competitions also were on display, showcasing the talents of artists near and far on a weekend that honored a great hometown talent of his own era, the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley.
