GREENFIELD

Shirley Louise (Miller) Wheeler, 90, Greenfield, passed away on September 20, 2021 at Hancock Regional Hospital. She was born on September 27, 1930 in New Palestine, IN, to Ralph and Ruth (Cartmell) Miller. Shirley is a 1948 graduate of New Palestine High School. She married her love, James E. Wheeler, on June 10, 1948.

Shirley had an extensive work history with employers such as Tuchman’s Cleaner’s, Rosalyn’s Bakery, Western Electric cafeteria, and Eli Lilly. She was an avid sports fan, rooting on all sorts of teams and all sorts of sports. She had a special love for younger children and found great joy in fostering a few in her younger years. She and her husband wintered in Ocala, FL. While in Florida, Shirley loved to play BINGO. But Shirley’s true aspiration was in her grandchildren and then in her great-grandchildren. Both sets of grandchildren fondly remember her signing, “You Are My Sunshine,” and then smooching them on their cheeks with her bright red lipstick. Shirley was also a member of Trinity Park United Methodist Church in Greenfield for many years.

She is survived by her loving sons: Gregory Jay Wheeler and Mark Verlin Wheeler; her awesome grandchildren: Katja “Kit” (Robert) Stine and Gregory James (Amanda) Wheeler; the apples of her eyes, great-grandchildren: Bradley Stine, Sophia Wheeler, and Adele Wheeler; and loving sister, Joyce Arthur.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim Wheeler of 71 years; and sister, Betty Wood.

Visitation will be held on Shirley’s 91st birthday, Monday, September 27, 2021 from 12noon to 1:30pm at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, with the funeral service immediately following. Shirley will be laid to rest next to her husband in Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Shriners Hospitals for Children and/or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to aide in the love Shirley expressed to all children.
