FORTVILLE — The Greenfield-Central boys tennis team scored a big Hoosier Heritage Conference victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Pitted against rival Mt. Vernon, the visiting G-C Cougars swept both doubles matches and two more singles contests to best the defending Hancock County champion Marauders, 4-1.

G-C’s Tyler White and Casey Hunt kicked off the victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles over Brady Pearson and Hayden Ford.

Jack Weidner and Corbin Tilley secured the team’s second point at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-0, over Brock Barr and Matthew Jones before CJ Michalek clinched the match at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3, against Robbie Moore.

Chris Long capped the victory with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over Manny Downs.

Mt. Vernon’s point came at No. 1 singles behind Adam Koon’s 6-4, 6-0 win. Koon improved to 9-1 on the season.

“By far our worst performance top to bottom,” Mt. Vernon head coach Gabe Muterspaugh remarked. “G-C came out fired up, played to win and took it to us. Give coach (Michael) Turpin credit. G-C was ready. We were flat, uninspired, had every excuse known to man and just really didn’t show up besides Koon and a decent fight from Manny.”

The Marauders dropped to 6-4 on the season and 2-1 in the HHC. The Cougars are now 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the HHC.

Both programs could meet again this weekend during the Hancock County Tournament at New Palestine on Saturday.
