NEW PALESTINE — The Mt. Vernon girls golf team keeps rolling.

On Saturday, the Marauders won the New Palestine Invitational with a clean sweep, claiming both the team title and individual low-medalist honors.

Mt. Vernon senior Alaina Nugent capped the Marauders’ winning performance by capturing medalist honors in an exciting playoff with a birdie on the first hole to defeat Heritage Christian’s Ellie McDonald. Nugent carded a 75 in the event.

The Marauders posted a 344 to take first in the eight-team invite. Heritage Christian was second at 351. Greenfield-Central (367) was third, followed by Hamilton Heights (394), host New Palestine (399) in fifth and Rushville (476) sixth overall. Greenwood Academy (516) placed seventh. Triton Central was eighth.

Mt. Vernon’s Meredith Johnson fired an 89. Sophie Amegnigan shot an 89, Mackenzie Miner added a 91 and Izzy VanHeel carded a 104.

Zoe Nelson led the Dragons with a 92. Kate Stanfield had a 96, Hanna Beller shot a 104 and Lily Kirchner had a personal-best 107. Ava Hasecuster added a 112.

Greenfield-Central was paced by Sydney Wherry’s 83, followed by Katie Curry’s 89. Brynn Elliott carded a 90. Abby Mulligan finished with a 105.

Boys Soccer

Marauders win third straight

The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team won its third consecutive game and Hoosier Heritage Conference opener on Saturday.

The host Marauders (3-1) shut out HHC foe New Castle, 3-0, with a trio of second-half goals.

In the first half, the Marauders out shot the visiting Trojans, but they weren’t able to find the back of the net until Zach Johnson broke out with a pair of goals.

Brennan La Belle finished off the scoring with a header over the outstretched arms of the New Castle keeper.

The Marauders’ second shutout of the season was cemented by the efforts of Ethan Tucker, Carsen Brandon, Dawson Wagner and goalkeeper Bryce Glazier.

Mt. Vernon defeated Richmond, 6-0, and Warren Central, 6-2, last week heading into Saturday.

GC drops two over weekend

The Greenfield-Central boys soccer team lost a pair during the Cougar Cup tournament on Saturday.

The Cougars lost to Floyd Central, 3-0 in the opening round, and Franklin Central, 5-0 in the consolation, to remain winless on the season at 0-4 overall.

The Cougars also lost 8-0 to host Noblesville last week. Greenfield-Central opens HHC play on Thursday at home against Yorktown at 7 p.m.

Dragons notch first win

The New Palestine boys soccer team posted its first victory of the season Saturday, blanking Warren Central 3-0.

The host Dragons wasted little time getting started, scoring in the ninth minute as Elliott Canova dropped the ball to Cohen Wintin inside the six-yard box for his varsity goal.

Canova later made it a 2-0 game in the 19th minute with an unassisted goal.

In the second half, the Dragons pushed the lead further when Garrett Canova drilled a 30-yard shot that dropped over the goalkeeper into the upper far-post netting in the 53rd minute.

The Dragons are now 1-2-0 on the year with losses to HHC foe Yorktown, 5-1, and Mooresville, 2-0, last week.

Girls Soccer

Marauders post second shutout

The Mt. Vernon girls soccer team followed up its 4-0 home win over Tipton on Thursday with another 4-0 victory on Saturday over visiting Franklin Community.

The Marauders improved to 2-0-1 on the season with the non-conference victory.

On Saturday, the Marauders (2-0-1) utilized constant pressure and a team effort to blank their second straight opponent.

Riley Britt was rarely tested, notching her second shutout and collected a pair of saves in the win.

Lily Wilson opened each half with a goal to establish Mt. Vernon’s lead. Kylie Brandes assisted one Wilson’s goals. Addy Wong and Maddie Swingle added the other two goals off assists from Shay Shipley.

Cougars fall to Roncalli

The Greenfield-Central girls soccer team opened the season with a 3-0 loss at home against Roncalli on Wednesday.

The Cougars (0-1) were short-handed, fielding a team without three seniors and two juniors for the match.

Dragons wallop Warriors

The New Palestine girls soccer team was dominant Wednesday in a 7-1 victory at Warren Central.

The Dragons struck early when Bethany Aldridge found the back of the net. Sydney Miller followed with two goals and an assist in her first game back from injury last year. Freshman Neveah Gebhart made her varsity debut and scored two goals.

Kansas Spicer and McKenzie Davis also each added goals. Freshman Tylar Whitaker had two assists. Freshman Campbell Wintin chipped in an assist. Aldridge and Davis also had an assist.

Tennis

Cougars fall to Lions

The Greenfield-Central boys tennis team narrowly lost to visiting Rushville, 3-2, on Monday.

The Cougars opened the season 2-0 with victories over Lawrence Central, 3-2, and Lapel, 4-1, last week.

On Monday, both doubles teams came through for the Cougars, but Rushville survived a couple third-set marathons in singles play to get the win.

On Saturday, the Cougars grabbed the lead behind a pair of two-set wins at singles by Matt Hyre (6-1, 6-1) and CJ Michalek (6-1, 6-0).

The No. 2 doubles tandem of Casey Hunt and Chris Long won 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 to secure the match for the Cougars, 3-1, before the No. 1 doubles duo of Jack Weidner and Corbin Tilley secured the fourth point (6-3, 5-7, 7-5).

Marauders extend winning streak

The Mt. Vernon boys tennis team won its third straight Muncie Burris Invite title Saturday and opened HHC play with a 3-2 victory over rival Pendleton Heights on Monday.

During their win on Monday, the Marauders came in short-handed, but they reshuffled to improve their season record to 3-2.

Adam Koon won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Robbie Moore won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to second two crucial points.

Matthew Jones rebounded after a 4-6 loss in the first set at No. 2 singles to nail down the win 6-1, 6-2.

“What a day and what a match,” Mt. Vernon head coach Gabe Muterspaugh commented. “Fight for each other, give their all and leave it all out there for all their teammates. I am so proud of our guys.”

On Saturday, Koon, Moore and Jones won at singles, while Brock Barr/Brady Pearson and Isaac Damer/Blake Augenstine were victorious in doubles play.

Dragons tame rival Tigers

The New Palestine boys tennis team posted a 4-1 victory Thursday at home against HHC foe Yorktown.

The Dragons improved to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in HHC Play.

The Dragons swept the singles, with Ezra Schwier winning 6-0, 6-0, Colin Darley 6-1, 6-2, and Caleb Davis, 7-5, 6-3, in his first varsity start.

At No. 2 doubles, Jackson Havel/Moses Haynes won 6-3, 6-2.
