Community briefs: Riley Festival contest forms online

GREENFIELD — Fine arts, photography, baked goods and more will be judged in the upcoming Riley Festival, and forms to enter contests are available online now at rileyfestival.com.

The festival is scheduled for Oct. 7-10 with the theme “The Bumblebee.” Contests also include poetry, pumpkins, Little Miss and Mister, the queen pageant and quilts. The “Bakers Best” contest will be judged Sept. 25.

Season-end gardening class scheduled

GREENFIELD — Putting your garden “to bed for the winter” will be taught in an event Aug. 28 at the Hancock County Public Library.

“Fall into Spring” is the theme for the event by the Hancock County Master Gardeners. Sign-in begins at 9:30 am. with a presentation by Lais McCartney at 10 a.m. McCartney, a Purdue Extension educator, will teach techniques for composting, planting cover crops, and creating an environment to sustain not only plants but also pollinators over the winter. The Master Gardeners will be on hand at education stations to give information on fall gardening and answer questions.

Registration for 60 seats is open through the day of the event at hcplibrary.com.

G-C Class of 1970 reunion set

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central High School Class of 1970 will be holding a “50 years Plus 1” reunion Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Bradley Hall banquet facility in downtown Greenfield. The class of 1970 was the first graduating class from GCHS. After postponing the celebration last year due to the pandemic, the milestone celebration will be held next month.

Registration open for fall break camps

INDIANAPOLIS — Registration is open now for fall break camps at the Indiana State Museum. Camps are for children in kindergarten through grade 6 and take place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 11-22. Cost is $55 per child, per day, with a 10 percent discount for members and a $5 sibling discount. Scholarships are available for qualifying families. For more information, visit indianamuseum.org.

G-C Class of 1976 reunion scheduled

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central High School Class of 1976 will hold its 45-year reunion at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Hancock County FOP starting at 6:30 p.m. Cost will be $20 per person.

Fundraiser car, plane show scheduled

NEW CASTLE — A plane and car show Aug. 28 will help children get new shoes in the Kiwanis Club of New Castle-Henry County Children’s Shoe Program.

The fly-in/cruise-in fundraiser is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Castle-Henry County Airport, 2912 E. 400S., New Castle. Cheeseburgers, brats, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served. All proceeds from food sales go toward the shoe program, in which the club so far has been able to provide nearly 400 children with a brand new pair of shoes in Henry County. The free event will include airplanes, medical helicopters and emergency vehicles on display.

Area theater groups holding auditions

GREENFIELD — Area theater groups are holding auditions for fall shows.

CrazyLake Acting Company will audition for “Clue” at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 29 and 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts, 122 W. Main St., Greenfield. The auditions are for ages 15 and older. The show will be Nov. 11-14. A COVID-19 vaccine will be required for cast and crew members in order to prevent an outbreak, the need to quarantine and the possibility of a canceled show. In Shelbyville, auditions are being held at 6:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 18 for “Bad Seed.” Auditions are at SCP Offstage, 1416 Miller Ave., Shelbyville. The play is scheduled for Oct. 8-10, and Oct. 15-17. For more information, call Mark Owens, (812) 552-6618.
