GREENFIELD — The sweep is complete.

The Mt. Vernon boys golf team claimed the trifecta on Monday afternoon, winning its first team sectional title since 2016 after already capturing the Hancock County and Hoosier Heritage Conference team championships earlier this season.

The Marauders shot a combined score of 315 at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield on Monday with Sam McWilliams leading Mt. Vernon’s sectional title run with an 18-hole tally of 70.

New Castle finished second in the team standings with a 319, followed by New Palestine in third with a 330. Shenandoah was fourth with a 350. Greenfield-Central took fifth with a 352 and Shelbyville was sixth at 361.

Eastern Hancock was 10th with a 415. Triton Central (366) was seventh. Morristown (388) took eighth. Southwestern (Shelbyville) had a 408 for ninth. Blue River Valley (461) placed 11th and Knightstown was 12th.

Mt. Vernon’s county championship last month at Hawk’s Tail Golf Club secured the program’s 10th in the past 12 years behind a nine-hole score of 162.

Marauder seniors Sam McWilliams and Aden Cappelletti tied for medalist honors at county with a 1-over-par 37.

McWilliams tied for second during the HHC golf championship on May 15 at The Players Club in Yorktown with an 18-hole score of 75 en route to the team’s first-ever league title. Mt. Vernon shot a 335 to win the HHC.

Just like at the HHC championship, New Castle’s Derek Tabor earned medalist honors during the sectional tournament by carding a 69. He shot a 68 at the HHC.

Cappalletti (77) was the fourth-best individual sectional finisher on the leaderboard behind McWilliams, who was runner-up, and New Castle’s Dillon Bergum (76) in third.

Kyran Maxfield shot an 84 along with Asher Cotton (84) for the Marauders.

The top-three teams from each sectional site advance to the regional, in addition to the top-three individuals not on an advancing team.

New Palestine was led by Matt Barada with a 77. Braeden Baker had an 83 for the Dragons, followed by AJ Williams (84), Sammy Chifalo (86) and Evan Griffith (90).

Greenfield-Central finished with both Joshua Alley and Tyler Young shooting 84s, respectively. Matthew Kaser had a 91, Bryce Hasty fired a 96, and Tyler Osborn posted a 93.

Eastern Hancock’s John McDaniel led the Royals with a 91. Chase Riggs shot a 101, and Gage Deiser had a 108. Carter Dishman carded a 115, and Landon O’Neal shot a 117.

New Castle carried a pair of golfers at sub-80 in Bergum and Matthew Gerth (77). Cole Wheeler shot a 97 as the team’s fourth competitor.

Shenandoah’s Jordan Zody (78), Triton Central’s Oliver Gearlds (78) and Morristown’s Asher Caldwell (81) each move on as individual regional qualifiers.

The Muncie Central Regional is scheduled for Thursday at The Players Club, beginning at 8 a.m. The top-three teams and top-five low individuals not on an advancing team will earn a berth to the IHSAA state finals at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel on Tuesday, June 15.
