NEW PALESTINE — Students at Brandywine Elementary School will be able to finish the school year in person after the discovery of a beehive in the building forced the cancellation of classes on Wednesday, May 26.

A beekeeper was summoned after a worker found some bees in the school’s gym late Tuesday evening. Principal Austin Theobald, in a post on Twitter, said a “large beehive” had been found inside the school. By the time the beekeeper arrived early Wednesday morning, the queen bee apparently had flown away, and only a dozen or so bees remained, said Wes Anderson, the school district’s director of communications. The beekeeper collected the remaining bees and was out of the building by 9:30 a.m.

District officials said they are not sure how long the bees had been inside the school or how they entered the building, but workers were checking for possible entry points.

Students will be back in school for their last day today (Thursday, May 27).
