Downtown Greenfield was a dog lover’s paradise on Saturday, when dozens of dogs took to the streets for the inaugural Mutts on Main event put on by Greenfield Main Street.

Participants paid to take part in the costume parade fundraiser, which benefited the Hancock County Humane Society and Greenfield Main Street.

Prizes were awarded for best costume and best trick.

Trent Qualkinbush and his Great Dane, Miss Mable, took home the prize for best costume for their portrayal of a horse trainer and his horse, with a tiny jockey riding atop the Great Dane, which sported a horse’s mane and saddle.

Qualkinbush played the part by wearing a blazer and tie, while his wife, Debbie, sported a dress and hat suitable for the Kentucky Derby.

Stephanie Broere and her dog, Nori Rose, won the prize for best trick. Broere, dressed as Harry Potter, cast a spell on the dog, dressed as the big-eared house elf, Dobby, from the Harry Potter movie franchise. The dog played dead on command after a wave of Broere’s wand.

It was an entertaining day for all, said Debra Smith, director of Greenfield Main Street.

Those attending browsed among vendor booths in the Living Alley before taking part in the costume parade, which took participants and their four-legged friends on a loop downtown, which included the Pennsy Trail.

Wooden Bear Brewing Co. also took part in the event, providing beer to accompany food trucks, while Craig Moore and the band Dawg Daze provided live music, all courtesy of Greenfield Main Street.
