GREENFIELD — A house’s occupants were transported to a hospital to be checked out Monday night after the home’s attached garage caught fire, sending smoke inside.

Firefighters responded to the fire shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Woodstream Drive.

Corey Breese, public information officer for the Greenfield Fire Territory, said heavy black smoke was coming from the house’s garage upon firefighters’ arrival.

One crew checked to see if any flames had spread into the house, Breese said, while another worked to remove the garage door.

“Once we were able to gain access to the garage, the fire went out pretty quick,” Breese said.

While smoke extended into the house, firefighters were able to prevent flames from spreading there.

Breese did not know how many occupants were in the house at the time of the fire, but said they were all transported to Hancock Regional Hospital to be checked out.

“Doesn’t look like it’s anything severe,” he said. “They’re going in to be checked out for a little bit of smoke inhalation.”

Steve Kropacek, GFT fire marshal, said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
