PREP ROUNDUP: No. 6 Royals win 11th straight game, unbeaten in MEC

The Eastern Hancock softball team kept its winning streak going, defeating Mid-Eastern Conference foe Cowan, 5-1, on the road Thursday.

The victory marked Eastern Hancock’s 11th consecutive and improved their season record to 11-1 and 3-0 in the MEC.

The visiting Class 2A No. 6 Royals led 1-0 after the top of the first and later broke a 1-1 tie by plating four combined runs through the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Caroline Stapleton led the Royals, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Sammie Bolding was 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI.

Brooklyn Willis went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Kaylee Kline was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Grace Stapleton went 1-for-2.

Sydni Bednarski, Bre Taulbee and Kaylee Stewart each scored one run apiece.

Maddie Turner earned the win in the circle, going 7.0 innings with four hits allowed, two walks issued and three strikeouts.

Cougars win third straight

The Greenfield-Central softball team defeated host Rushville 5-2 on Thursday night to win its third consecutive game.

The Cougars are now 9-2 on the season.

Greenfield-Central grabbed a 4-0 lead after the top the of second and added an additional run in the top of fifth.

Mallorie Fultz went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to pace the Cougars at the plate. Ella Redmon was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Olivia Roberts finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Caroline Gibson went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Megan Wineinger was 3-for-4 with a run. Lilly Stewart finished 1-for-4. Morgan Hornaday went 1-for-4 with a run. Taylor Smith also scored a run.

Hannah Holden picked up the pitching win, throwing 5.1 innings. Camille Burelison pitched 1.2 innings without surrendering a hit while walking one and striking out three.

Baseball

Cougars lose first HHC game

The Greenfield-Central baseball team dropped its first Hoosier Heritage Conference game of the season, 8-1, to host Yorktown on Thursday night.

The Cougars are now 6-4 on the season and 4-1 in the HHC, which put them in a first-place tie in the league standings with Mt. Vernon (8-3, 4-1 HHC).

Grant Shepherd recorded the Cougars’ lone hit. Jaden McGee scored Greenfield-Central’s run.

Royals drop fourth straight

The Eastern Hancock baseball team grabbed an early 3-1 lead at Mid-Eastern Conference foe Cowan on Thursday before the host Blackhawks rallied back to win 8-3.

Cowan scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead as the visiting Royals eventually dropped its fourth straight game.

The Royals are now 3-6 on the season and 1-2 in the MEC.

Landon Kintner led the Royals at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double. Wyatt Sutton finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Brandon Ridgway and Drew White each recorded a hit apiece.

Landon Stanley and Josh Hunt scored the Royals other two runs. Sutton, Ridgway, Hunt and Cameron Wise each stole one base for Eastern Hancock.

Tennis

Dragons beat Tigers

The New Palestine tennis team improved to 2-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play Thursday with a 3-2 victory at Yorktown.

Olivia Hasenkamp led the Dragons with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. The doubles also had dominant wins, as Lucy Miller and Mia Knoop won 6-2, 6-2, while Natalee Russell and Lily Haeberle won 6-1, 6-2.

Marauders get past Cougars

The Mt. Vernon girls tennis team bested rival Greenfield-Central 3-2 on Thursday night.

The Marauders improved to 4-0 on the season, building a 3-0 lead over the visiting Cougars within the first hour. Greenfield-Central battled back for the final two points, stretching a pair of matches deep into the third set.

Lydia Ruegsegger extended her unbeaten streak this spring and won in quick fashion 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Marauders.

The undefeated duo of Anna Isger and Maddie Swingle won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles for Mt. Vernon’s second point, while the Marauders’ tandem of Lexi Shelton and Cici Buhlman sealed the victory at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-3.

The Cougars went to work at No. 2 singles with Brianna McConnell prevailing in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 10-7. Jaclyn Layton rallied back at No. 3 singles to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Greenfield-Central is now 2-3 on the season.

Royals fall to Blue River

The Eastern Hancock Royals lost to Blue River Valley at home 4-1 on Thursday.

The Royals claimed their point at No. 3 singles behind freshman Lexi Swauger’s 6-1, 7-5 victory.

Freshman Savanah Hardin challenged at No. 2 singles, taking an early 6-4 lead after the first set before falling 6-2, 6-3 in the next two.

The Royals are now 4-2 on the season.
