Sideline: Gibson bounces back for Rangers

After a rough start at Kansas City on April 1, Greenfield native Kyle Gibson has gone 2-0 for the Texas Rangers through his next two starts this month.

Gibson won his first game of the year at home against Toronto on April 7, going 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts, one walk and zero runs allowed. The Rangers won the game 2-1.

The right-hander’s next start this past Tuesday saw him go 7.0 innings with three strikeouts, two walks and one earned run against Tampa Bay. The Rangers beat the Rays, 8-3.

Gibson’s recent success lowered his ERA to 4.05 this season and increased his strikeout total to 12 in 13.1 innings. His next start is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Arlington, Texas against the Baltimore Orioles.

G-C grad, Wise, transfers to IUPUI

Earlier this month, IUPUI women’s basketball head coach Austin Parkinson announced two transfers that will be joining the Jaguar roster next season, including Greenfield-Central graduate Madison Wise from Iowa State.

Wise heads to IUPUI having played the last four years at Iowa State. For her career, Wise averaged 6.4 points pergame and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 31.4 percent from 3-point range.

As a freshman, Wise won three Big 12 Freshman of the Week awards. Wise scored a season-best 13 points in Iowa State’s first round win over Michigan State in the 2021 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

IHSAA track, softball state finals moved

On Wednesday, IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig announced the state finals host sites for two spring state tournaments.

Following conversations with the IHSAA Executive Committee, this year’s boys, girls and unified track and field state finals will be contested at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.

The boys meet will be contested on Friday, June 4 while the unified meet and girls meet are set for Saturday, June 5.

The softball state finals will be played at Center Grove High School in Greenwood on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12.

The track meets had been planned for Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington while the softball games had been scheduled for Purdue University’s Bittinger Stadium in West Lafayette.

Both universities had confirmed last month they would be unable to host the IHSAA events with spectators on the scheduled dates.

MV grad earns HCAC weekly honors

Anderson University football standout Alex Barnett (McCordsville/Mt. Vernon) earned the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Special Teams Player of the Week, which was announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Mount St. Joseph University (1-4, 1-4) fought past Anderson (1-4, 1-4) with a 49-30 victory on Saturday.

Barnett took a kickoff to the house for 94 yards. The senior from McCordsville totaled 166 kick-return yards on five kickoffs. Barnett also added a reception for nine yards.
