Prep Roundup: Cougars girls track team wins home opener

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central girls track team bested by New Castle (70) and Scecina Memorial (4) with 91 team points on Tuesday.

Kayana Maroska was a four-event winner for the Cougars, taking first in the 100-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles and 200-meter run. She was also on the winning 1,600 relay team along with Addie Hill, Audrey Pechin and Reagan Crouch.

Hill won the 400, Audrey Brinkruff led the way in the 800 and joined Alyssa Siegal, Gia Valenzano and Emily Wright to win the 3,200 relay.

Savanah Lake won the 100 and was second in the 200. She also teamed with Lauren Uptegrove, Lindsey McCord and Ava Grass to finish first in the 400 relay.

Grass won the long jump and was third in the pole vault. Betsy Underwood won the pole vault competition for Greenfield-Central.

Dragons take 2nd at Southport

The New Palestine track and field teams placed second in a four-way meet Tuesday at Southport.

The Dragons boys tallied 67 points to finish second to host Southport (79.5). New Palestine beat Connersville (61.5) and Rushville (36).

The Dragons girls scored 77.5 points to finish second to Southport (90.5). New Palestine beat Connersville (48) and Rushville (28).

The Dragon boys dominated the field events, with Richard Clevenger winning both the shot put and discus. Sage Halter won the pole vault. Damon Hockett won the high jump and Nick Bastian the long jump.

Drew Lapenta, Caleb Byers, Jaret Whitaker and Wes Jewell won the 1,600-meter relay.

The Dragons girls won five events. Lexi Baynes won the 400-meter, while Kendall Mann won the 800 and 1,600. Maya Hobbs, Kennedy Garrett, Emily Hunter and Taylor Kelley won the 400 relay. Emily Adam, Emma Mann, Anne Bauer and Kendall Mann won the 3,200 relay.

Marauders top Wildcats

The Mt. Vernon boys track team toppled defending sectional champion Lawrence North at home on Tuesday night.

The Marauders’ victory over the visiting Wildcats was the program’s first in school history. Mt. Vernon won the meet 79-53.

Baseball

Royals get back on track

The Eastern Hancock baseball team bounced back Tuesday night with a 14-9 victory over Mid-Eastern Conference foe Randolph Southern.

The Royals’ MEC-opening win improved their season record to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the league behind 13-hit attack.

Eastern Hancock trailed 4-0 after three innings before turning the tide with an eight-run top of the fourth. Randolph Southern cut the deficit 8-6 after the bottom half of the frame.

The Royals responded with six runs over the next two innings to keep the Rebels at bay.

Eastern Hancock tallied four doubles, two triples and drew seven walks at the plate. Caden Hancock finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and a double.

Wyatt Sutton went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two triples. Drew White was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double.

Cameron Wise (3-for-3), Brandon Ridgway, CJ Titara (1-for-2, double), Landon Kintner (1-for-5) and Griffin Brown (1-for-3, double) each drove in a run.

Wise earned the pitching win. The senior threw 1.0 inning with two hits allowed in relief. The Royals quartet of pitchers combined for 11 hits surrendered, five walks and six strikeouts.

Cougars continue to soar

The Greenfield-Central baseball team maintained its lead atop the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings with a 7-6 victory at Delta on Tuesday.

The two-game series-opening win improved the Cougars’ season record to 5-1 and 3-0 in the HHC. The two teams completed their series Wednesday at Greenfield-Central.

The Cougars won their fourth straight game behind a late 3-run charge in the top of the sixth and seventh. The game stood tied 4-all after the fourth inning with the Cougars taking a 3-0 lead initially in the third.

Delta pulled ahead 5-4 after the fifth, but the Cougars tied it again 5-all in the top of the sixth. The host Eagles scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but they couldn’t match Greenfield-Central’s two-run seventh, powered by a two-run home run from Conner Sims.

Parker Stanley pitched the Cougars to victory, striking out 10 batters and walking three in 5.0 innings of work.

Kalob Martin, Lance McKee and Grant Shepherd logged multiple hits. Martin and Sims each drove in a pair of runs apiece.

Dragons win series opener

The New Palestine baseball team used an 11-run third inning to beat Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Yorktown 16-1 in five innings Tuesday at home.

The Dragons are now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the HHC. The teams concluded their two-game series Wednesday at Yorktown.

The Dragons led 3-0 after an inning as the first four Dragons reached base – Carter Stogsdill singled, Kaiden Kirkwood was hit by a pitch and Brendan Tabor hit an RBI double. An error brought Kirkwood home, while Maddox Manes’ sacrifice fly plated Tabor.

The Dragons exploded for 11 runs on eight hits in the third. Manes had two run-scoring singles in the inning. Caleb Davis hit a two-run triple. Tabor and Zayden Stiller’s RBI doubles helped key the frame.

Tabor was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI. Manes was 2-for-2 with three RBI. Nunnally was also 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hayden Isaacs added a double.

Manes tossed a complete game, allowing three hits and no earned runs in five innings. He struck out seven.

Girls Tennis

Cougars beat Yellow Jackets

The Greenfield-Central girls tennis team locked down its first win of the season at home Tuesday night against Morristown, 4-1.

The host Cougars claimed two team points from Zoe Starks, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and Jaclyn Layton, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Ali Knecht and Lauren Chastain won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, while Leah Puckett and Makayla Price won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles to finalize the scoring.

The Cougars are now 1-2 on the season.

Dragons fall to Tigers

The New Palestine tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision Tuesday to Triton Central.

Abby Blachly lost in a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles, while Olivia Hasenkamp fell 6-1, 6-1. Courtney Johnson dropped a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision.

At doubles, Lucy Miller/Emmy Giddens fell 6-4, 6-0, and Natalee Russell/Lily Haeberle battled before losing 7-5, 7-5.

The Dragons are now 1-2 on the season.

Boys Golf

Dragons win three-way match

The New Palestine golf team won a three-way match Tuesday at The Legends, shooting 172 to beat Greenfield-Central (181) and Whiteland (192).

Matt Barada led the Dragons with a 39. A.J. Williams and Landon Beaty each shot 44s. Braeden Baker added a 45 and Sammy Chifalo a 48.

The Greenfield-Central Cougars were led by freshman Tyler Young with a 41 during their season-opening match.

Cougars’ sophomores Josh Alley and Bryce Hasty had a 43 and a 48, respectively. Senior Averell Wooten-Brown finished the scoring with a 49.
