CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Eastern Hancock school board will hold three executive sessions this week to interview candidates for its superintendent position, a hiring process the board hopes to complete by the end of May.

The school board will hold the executive sessions at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 24-26. They will be closed to the public.

Board president Jim Jackson said the board is still working to schedule interviews with some candidates, but plans to interview more than three in an initial round to be followed by a smaller number of follow-ups. He said the board would prefer to hold the interviews in person but may speak with some candidates remotely.

Jackson said the board heard from “a number of really high-quality applicants” and is pleased with the response.

The board is seeking to replace Superintendent Dave Pfaff, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Pfaff, a longtime principal of Eastern Hancock High School and Middle School, retired from that position in 2019 but quickly came out of retirement to take over after the previous superintendent, Vicki McGuire, retired just weeks before the start of the 2019-20 school year.

Jackson said the board is aiming to hire a replacement before the school year ends on May 27.

“Ideally, we’d like some overlap, so Mr. Pfaff could be there to really help that person get started,” he said.
