HANCOCK COUNTY — A Fortville man has been charged with multiple felonies after he was accused of threatening a woman with a gun and hitting her.

David Taylor Medcalf, 39, 300 block of Oak Street, is in the county jail under a $10,000 cash bond after a case was opened against him March 1.

Medcalf is facing seven charges, including a Level 3 felony count of criminal confinement with a deadly weapon, a crime that carries a sentence of up to 16 years in prison.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Medcalf became violent with the woman on the evening of Feb. 25 at his home in Fortville, throwing her in a bathtub and stepping on her throat. The woman tried to escape, she told police, but was pulled by her hair back into the residence. Medcalf also broke the woman’s phone when she tried to call 911 and pointed a gun at her and himself during the altercation.

He was arrested the next day. The woman was treated for bruises and other injuries.

In addition to the Level 3 felony confinement charge, Medcalf also faces a Level 5 felony count of intimidation; and Level 6 felony charges of domestic battery; strangulation; and pointing a firearm at another. Medcalf is also facing two misdemeanor charges.

A bail review hearing is slated for March 22, in Hancock County Circuit Court with Judge Scott Sirk.
