GREENFIELD — Like she’d done many time before, Mandy Hancock logged in for the September Mary Kay sales development team meeting. As independent sales director for the Greenfield area, she was expecting to give a report on marketing strategies during the pandemic. Instead, she got a surprise.

The entire sales development team was in on the call — and the news. Mandy Hancock had been chosen Mary Kay’s Miss Go Give for the month of February.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” said Josh Hancock, Mandy’s husband. “I’d always heard of this award, and I knew she was a giving person. It’s kind of nice to see somebody do something for somebody else and not get paid for it.”

With more than 2.4 million Mary Kay consultants worldwide, Hancock had a lot of competition. In July, Hancock will travel to Dallas, Texas, to compete against 11 other contestants in the national competition.

The Go-Give Program was officially organized in June 1973 to recognize one Independent Sales Director per month for her willingness to help others climb the ladder of success. Each award recipient is chosen because she possesses characteristics of the example set by founder Mary Kay Ash: a willingness to help others achieve goals in the business; someone who goes above and beyond; and someone who genuinely cares for others and their success.

As a full-time Mary Kay sales director, Hancock has always instinctively understood that it’s a people business. Her meetings and events were open to any Mary Kay consultant — including those from out of her area. Even though Hancock was aware that sales from out-of-district representatives wouldn’t count towards her monthly sales, she was always happy to share tips and advice.

Hancock also headed up a yearly initiative to give to the elderly at Christmas time, gathering in enough donations to service two or three area nursing homes. She had memories of visiting her own grandmother in a nursing home and noticed that not everyone got visitors — much less a Christmas gift. Her project started as just her, her husband and three children but has now grown into a large group that goes to distribute gifts every year during the holidays.

Hancock’s bounty for being chosen Miss Go Give for February included mention in the Mary Kay magazine and a recognition pin. A gift box of additional swag is on the way.

Miss Go Give is the highest honor in the Mary Kay community. Knowing that her nomination came from her peers was humbling.

“I’m still kind of in shock about it,” Hancock said. “I feel like I’ve already won.”
