GREENFIELD — Roads around Hancock County are improving despite another round of snowfall early Thursday, Feb. 18, Hancock County engineer Gary Pool said.

Pool said he is always concerned when the area sees more snow soon after a big storm, but the highway department is making progress on clearing roads around the county. Pool said department employees are working from 4 a.m. to midnight to clear them, and he has redirected resources to focus more on neighborhood streets that might still be covered. Major roads, he said, are in good condition.

The highway department has also received some deliveries of salt after running low earlier this week.

Greenfield street commissioner Tyler Ranklins said conditions on city streets have also improved. He said rising temperatures this weekend should help with melting. The high on Sunday is expected to be in the 30s, which will be the first time in two weeks the temperature will be above freezing.

The county is projected to receive minor snowfall on Sunday, Feb. 21, but with increasing temperatures, Pool said it should be safe and relatively easy for drivers to get around over the weekend. High winds, he added, are more likely than a little more snow to set back his department’s efforts.

“Wind is what I’m most afraid of. Another few inches of snow won’t bother me at all, but give me 20 mile an hour winds and I’m in a panic,” he said.
