MONON — Monon, in White County, is just one of the many communities founded along Indiana’s rail lines and an example of Indiana’s rich history of transportation connected to the railroads.

The Monon Line (also called the Hoosier Line) and the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railroad operated from 1857 to 1956 almost entirely in the State of Indiana. You don’t have to be a railroad enthusiast to enjoy this rich Hoosier history.

The Monon Connection, located north of Monon at 10012 U.S. Highway 421, is reputed to be the largest detailed train museum in the world. A tour of the museum will reveal a world of treasures and information about train travel in the United States. Did you know that each train line had its own dining car with a china pattern specifically created for its unique brand? Often, the regions the railways served provided the inspiration for the designs. The Monon Connection boasts extremely rare china patterns and pieces including some not found in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.

While in Monon, the Whistle Stop, next to the museum, is a sit-down family diner where families can watch model trains circle above as they dine.

If folk art is your passion, White County’s Barn Quilt Trail of the Hoosier Hearland features 11 stops in White County. Barn quilt tours celebrate the history of agriculture and the time-honored tradition of quilting.

Each White County community has parks with opportunities for walking/hiking. A favorite destination is Altherr Nature Park, located on South Main Street in Monticello. The Nature Park consists of 18.2 acres of land and showcases natural grasses and a multi-use trail winding through a nature preserve.
