PREP ROUNDUP: Marauders move one game closer to repeat

The Mt. Vernon girls basketball team is now one game away from a second straight outright Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.

The Marauders defeated HHC foe New Castle, 59-27, on the road Tuesday night to improve to 14-5 overall and 6-0 in the league with one more regular-season game remaining.

New Palestine is currently second in the HHC at 6-1.

Mt. Vernon will travel to HHC rival Delta tonight with an opportunity to secure the outright conference title during its regular-season finale.

The Marauders seized their seventh consecutive win while at New Castle behind a team-high 27 points from senior Lexi Shelton. The University of Saint Francis commit shot 9 of 12 from the field with three steals.

Abby Worley added 11 points with a trio of 3-pointers, six assists and four steals. Katie Gawrys had six points and three steals. Olivia Yeley finished with three steals and six points.

Next week, the Marauders open Class 4A Sectional 9 at Muncie Central against Pendleton Heights on Tuesday night. Mt. Vernon defeated Pendleton Heights 49-38 during the regular season.

Gymnastics

Dragons win home opener

The New Palestine gymnastics team won a four-way meet during its home opener Tuesday, tallying 98.475 points. New Palestine defeated Morristown (84.125), Scecina Memorial (58.75) and Indianapolis Lutheran (33.55).

Addy Kendall won the floor exercise with a score of 8.35. Emma Poag (8.1) finished third, Rebecca Johnson (7.85) was fourth, Kennedy Garrett (7.65) fifth and Emily Hunter (7.45) sixth.

Garrett won on vault with a score of 8.65. Poag finished fourth (8.225) and Kendall fifth (8.05). Hunter, Addi Bird and Maliah Ringham tied for sixth (8.0).

Garrett also won on beam with a score of 8.45. Alyse Rickey was fourth (7.725) and Poag fifth (7.625).

On bars, Garrett and Poag tied for second (8.55). Rickey was fourth (8.35), Kendall fifth (8.2) and Hunter sixth (7.525).

Garrett was second in the all-around (33.325), with Poag third (32.5) and Kendall fourth (31.15).

The Dragons are back in action tonight at Roncalli.

Kirby hired as MV boys golf coach

During the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, Tom Kirby was officially hired as the Marauders varsity boys golf coach.

Kirby’s role as golf coach is effective immediately.

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the IU Kelley School of Business, Kirby has provided support for the Mt. Vernon girls golf team in recent years and has served as a golf instructor and mentor.

“We are excited to have coach Kirby at the helm of the boys golf program,” Mt. Vernon athletics director Brandon Ecker said. “His patience, work ethic, knowledge and love for the game of golf will make him an excellent leader for our student-athletes. As a long-time member of our coaching staff, Tom truly understands the important role that education-based athletics plays in the development of our youth.”

In addition to leading the boys golf program, Kirby will continue to serve as a varsity assistant coach for the Marauders’ girls basketball team. He has been an assistant coach since 1998, helping guide the program to nearly 400 wins, six sectional titles, three regional championships, a state runner-up finish in 2012 and a state championship in 2013.
