GREENFIELD — If anyone agrees with the old adage, “never look a gift horse in the mouth,” it’s Macy Huber. The Greenfield-Central senior was selected to be the recipient of a $2,100 scholarship from Agape Therapeutic Riding Resources as awarded through the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The narrative began last August when Huber learned she had been nominated to receive the grant from Agape Therapeutic Riding Resources. The non-profit had applied for a 2021 Legacy Grant for a capital improvement project. In order to fulfill the requirements of the grant, applicants were to also give a scholarship to a local high school senior. Agape executive director Stephanie Amick submitted the names of three Rising Star high school seniors, and Huber was the lucky choice.

The grant and scholarship program was initiated by the NBA as a ‘give-back’ measure. In honor of the selection of Indianapolis as the location for the 2021 All-Star game, 21 local non-profits and 21 high school seniors were tabbed to receive financial support. Although the NBA is an international organization, only Indiana non-profits were eligible to apply for the grant.

“The NBA Legacy grants create an Indianapolis legacy with projects that extend beyond the game itself,” Amick said.

Overall, 21 Indiana non-profits were chosen to receive grants with a nod to the year 2021. In addition to the selection of Agape Therapeutic Riding Resources, other group recipients included five Hoosier Boys & Girls Clubs and two YMCAs. Knightstown Kids Inc. received a grant to create a new outdoor playground which will include an exact replica of the Hoosier Gym basketball court made famous in the movie “Hoosiers.”

The grantees were chosen from 182 applicants, representing 18 Indiana counties.

Agape Therapeutic Riding Resources has three locations in Cicero, Martinsville and Greenfield. The group plans to use the $50,000 grant at the Greenfield location.

“We’re replacing the arena footing (floor) and putting a cover over the outdoor arena,” Amick said.

Huber was to be a part of a ceremony at the 2021 All-Star game in Indianapolis, but like many events, COVID-19 has put the kibosh on a public ceremony. Instead, grant recipients and scholarship honorees will attend a ceremony in 2024, which is the next time the All-Star game will be held in Indiana.

Amick hopes that Huber will be available to attend a barn ceremony at the facility once the project is completed.

Huber hasn’t decided where she will attend college yet. As a stellar member of the Greenfield-Central bowling team, she is hoping for a bowling scholarship.
