HANCOCK COUNTY — The county added 89 COVID-19 cases Wednesday, raising its total to 5,049.

No new novel coronavirus deaths were added, keeping its total at 83.

It took until October, about seven months into the pandemic, for the county to tally its first 1,000 known COVID-19 cases. The county passed 2,000 in November and had 3,077 as of Dec. 2. Less than two weeks later, the county exceeded 4,000.

The Indiana State Department of Health kept Hancock County’s weekly COVID-19 advisory level Wednesday at orange, the second-most severe. All of the state’s counties were orange or red — the most severe.

Wednesday also marked the first day of reporting seven-day and all-time COVID-19 positivity rates after the state corrected the way they had previously been calculated. Hancock County’s seven-day positivity rate between Dec. 17 and 23 for all tests is 12%, while the cumulative rate is 9.7%. For unique individuals, the county’s seven-day rate is 19% and its cumulative rate is 15.2%.

The county also added 568 tests Wednesday, raising its total to 63,747.
