INDIANAPOLIS — Following a close vote, the Indianapolis Zoo announces that its new baby giraffe has been named Kendi (KEN-ee).
Kendi was born on Nov. 8 to three-year-old first-time mother Kita. The male calf weighed 137 pounds.
The name Kendi was chosen by Facebook fans were invited to choose from three options preselected by Zookeepers. Kendi, an African name meaning “loved one,” received about 42 percent of the 5,100 votes which came from as far away as the United Kingdom.
The zoo’s giraffe herd, which now numbers five, will spend much of the winter inside its climate-controlled indoor facility. The new family is expected to make its public debut in the spring. At that time, guests will have an opportunity to meet members of the herd up close during public feeds.
