The Class 4A No. 16 Mt. Vernon girls basketball team bounced back quickly after dropping its season opener at home Thursday night.
The Marauders (1-1) even upped their season record Saturday with a 49-38 victory against visiting Warren Central.
The home game was Mt. Vernon’s second straight with three consecutive scheduled to start the 2020-21 campaign.
The Marauders host Noblesville on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Against Warren Central, Mt. Vernon received a game-high 17 points from senior Lexi Shelton followed by junior Maddie Swingle’s nine points.
Shelton finished 8-for-10 from the free-throw line and buried three of the Marauders’ nine 3-pointers in the game.
Shelton and Swingle both added a team-best seven rebounds each.
Ellery Minch, a freshman, had three steals, two assists, four rebounds, two 3-pointers and eight points.
Abby Worley, a senior point guard, contributed seven points, a pair of 3-pointers, four assists and two steals.
Olivia Yeley went 4-for-4 from the foul line with three rebounds. Junior Shay Shipley posted three assists and four points.
Warren Central (0-2) was led by K’la Talley’s 13 points. Le’Aije Ellington gave the Warriors another 10 points.
Cougars fall just
short to Woodmen
The Greenfield-Central girls basketball team battled back from an early deficit, but the visiting Whiteland Warriors narrowly escaped to win, 44-42, on Saturday.
The Cougars (1-1) were coming off a 27-19 victory at Greenwood on Thursday and nearly won their second straight despite trailing 17-10 against Whiteland after the first quarter.
Greenfield-Central took a 24-23 lead by halftime. The Cougars fell behind 34-32 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
But, Addison Hill put the Cougars ahead 37-36 with an and-1 with 4 minutes left in the game, and Brooke Herrell drained a 3-pointer to put Greenfield-Central in front 42-41 with 1:35 remaining.
The Cougars faced a 44-42 deficit with 3.5 seconds left, but they couldn’t convert from the foul line on their final possession and unfortunately fell just short of the win.
Greenfield-Central returns to the court on Saturday at home against Guerin Catholic at 1:30 p.m.
