HANCOCK COUNTY — The county added 54 COVID-19 cases Friday, setting a new daily case record for the third day in a row.

It made for 181 cases added this week, and raised the county’s total to 1,549, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

Dr. Sandra Aspy, Hancock County health officer, was not aware of any clusters contributing to the spikes, but she said she thinks the virus is spreading because too many people are not staying home who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus; have been identified as a close contact; or are awaiting test results. She also thinks indoor gatherings of people not wearing masks or social distancing are other reasons behind the rises.

Hancock County didn’t add any COVID-19 deaths Friday, keeping that total at 45. Another 470 administered tests were added, raising that total to 32,588. Almost 21,000 individuals have been tested for COVID-19 in the county.

Hancock Regional Hospital had four patients hospitalized with COVID-19 Friday, according to Craig Felty, vice president, chief nursing officer and chief operating officer for the hospital.

Indiana added the most cases to its total Friday for the third time in a row as well, with 4,714 from Nov. 3 through Nov. 5. The state’s total is now 200,823.

Thirty-seven COVID-19 deaths from Oct. 30 through Nov. 7 were also added to Indiana’s total Friday, raising that amount to 4,306.

The state tallied 43,366 new administered tests Friday from June 7 through Nov. 5, bringing the total to more than 3.11 million. More than 1.77 million individuals have been tested in the state.

The statewide COVID-19 hospital census continues to reach new highs too. On Thursday, the count was 2,001, more than 1,500 of whom were confirmed COVID-19 patients while 477 were patients under investigation.

Since Nov. 2, the census has been exceeding the previous high of 1,799 set on April 13.
