Hancock County Retired Teachers earn volunteer awards

HANCOCK COUNTY — Hancock County Retired Teachers recently held its fall meeting at Nameless Creek Youth Camp for a socially-distanced picnic. Awards were presented to Steve Burt and Debbie Byers for their service to the community. Burt was awarded the prestigious Clock Award for Area 7 for more than 800 hours of volunteer work in 2019. Byers received her award for exceptional service as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer.

The Hancock County Retired Teachers Association also received a state award for its group service project for Hope House. Retired educators from Hancock County recorded 18,444 volunteer hours for 2019.

Trish Whitcomb, executive director for the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, presented information about the Call and Learn program, a free tutoring by telephone service available for all students. Students and parents can call 877-45-STUDY (877-457-8839) to request assistance from a volunteer educator. The hotline is open weekdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
