The Mt. Vernon girls soccer team opened Class 3A Sectional 12 on Tuesday night with a bang, defeating Shelbyville 10-1 to advance into Thursday night’s semifinal round.

The Marauders scored eight goals in the first half and two more in the second at the East Central Sectional to improve to 13-2 on the season. They beat the Golden Bears 12-0 during the regular season.

The team’s seventh-straight win was highlighted by two goals from Mattie Isger and Shay Shipley. Mariam Konate had a goal and an assist.

Anna Isger posted one goal and an assist, while Mattie Swingle and Katie Gawrys both had goals. Shay Stindle added a goal, along with Anna Miller. Riley Pearson had three assists.

“Good overall team win for the Marauders,” Mt. Vernon head coach Steve Williams said. “The girls shared the ball well and spread the scoring around.”

The Greenfield-Central Cougars fell during the evening’s other Sectional 12 opening-round game, 5-0, against host East Central.

The Cougars finish the season 7-9-1.

East Central and Mt. Vernon will play on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. followed by Richmond vs. New Palestine at 7:30 p.m.

Volleyball

Marauders earn sweep

The Class 4A ninth-ranked Mt. Vernon Marauders swept past the Shenandoah Raiders on Monday night to win their seventh straight and improve to 17-4 on the season.

The Marauders won with ease, 25-5, 25-12, 25-10.

Tatum Fitzgerald led the offense for Mt. Vernon with 10 kills. Cecilia Bulmahn added nine.

Defensively, Bulmahn and Abby Herman posted 11 digs each with Claire Ertel adding nine.

In the front line defense, Macy Lyons dominated with four blocks and Bulmahn added three. Rylee Ugen put up 26 assists.

The Marauders close out their home schedule Thursday against Hoosier Heritage Conference foe New Palestine.

Cougars fall to Tigers

The Greenfield-Central volleyball team lost 3-0 to 4A No. 10 Fishers on Monday night at home.

The visiting Tigers won 25-20, 25-16, 25-16.

Ava Antic tallied seven kills and eight digs for the Cougars. Molly Schwarzkopf had seven kills and three blocks. Rachel Campbell recorded 11 digs. Morgan Hornaday had 15 assists.

Dragons sweep Millers

The New Palestine volleyball team swept Noblesville 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 Monday.

Grace Myers led the Dragons with 21 digs. Kaelyn Armstrong added 10 digs and six kills. Jesi Hall tallied 17 kills and Liv Ellis 13.

Sarah Adam had 31 assists. Rachel Popp had eight digs and two aces. Reagan Kleiman added four kills.

“Really great win tonight over a solid Noblesville team,” Dragons coach Kelli Gabehart said. “We scored a lot of points in the middle They had a hard time defending Jesi and Liv. It was great to see the teamwork and energy from each player.”
