The Class 4A ninth-ranked Mt. Vernon volleyball team won it’s sixth straight on Thursday night, defeating Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Shelbyville 3-1 on the road.

The Marauders rallied to beat the Golden Bears 24-26, 25-16, 25-22, 25-15. They are now 16-4 on the season.

Cecilia Bulmahn led all MV attackers with 20 kills in 34 attempts. She also had 18 digs.

Claire Ertel added 16 kills, and Olivia Yeley had six. Ertel led the team with 32 digs. Abby Herman recorded 17.

Delaney Bowser had two aces and 11 digs while the team racked up 24 total blocks. Yeley finished with eight, Macy Lyons had seven and Rylee Ugen had five and a team-high 35 assists.

Dragons lose in

five-set thriller

The New Palestine volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to Class 2A No. 5 Triton Central Thursday, falling 25-20, 22-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-12.

Sarah Adam tallied 41 assists and 37 digs to lead the Dragons — the most digs in the program’s recent history.

Grace Myers added 28 digs and Honour Mallory 16 digs. Kaelyn Armstrong had a double-double with 11 digs and 11 kills. Jesi Hall had 20 kills and Liv Ellis 11 kills.

The Dragons (16-6) are back in action today at the Richmond Invitational

season finale

The New Palestine boys soccer team dropped its season finale 2-0 Thursday at Pendleton Heights.

The Dragons finished the regular season with a 2-12 mark and 1-6 in HHC play. They open sectional play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Vernon against Richmond.

The Greenfield-Central boys soccer team defeated HHC foe New Castle 2-0 Thursday in the Cougars’ league finale.

The Cougars fired 17 shots in the first half with Jackson Findley hammering home a goal on a penalty kick to make it 1-0.

In the second half, Findley made it 2-0 after the Cougars posted 15 more shots.

G-C ended the regular season with a 5-7-1 record and 5-2 in the HHC, which tied them for second place. The Cougars open sectional play on Monday night against host Mt. Vernon at 6 p.m.

past Lions for victory

The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team blanked visiting Rushville 5-0 on Thursday.

Noah Whitehouse recorded the shutout in the regular-season finale. Aiden Cappelletti scored MV’s first goal in the first half on a penalty kick.

The Marauders had four more goals in the second half from Brennan La Belle, Joseph Knowlton, Tyler Webb and Cappelletti. Assists went to Taylor Lorsung and Ethan Tucker.

Mt. Vernon finished the season with a 7-8-1 record and 3-4 in the HHC. They host rival Greenfield-Central on Monday to open sectional play at 6 p.m.

Girls Soccer

Cougars lose

season finale

The Greenfield-Central girls soccer team lost its season finale against Franklin Community Thursday at home 2-1.

The Cougars dominated possession and only allowed five total shots on goal, but unfortunately two free kicks found the back of the net.

Franklin built a 2-0 lead, but Greenfield cut the deficit in two during the second half when Kambell Trapp slotted a pass to Kelsi McLaughlin, who beat the keeper.

The Cougars travel to the East Central Sectional on Tuesday where they will play No. 11 East Central in the opening round at 7:30 p.m.
