Martin worked for the U.S. Postal Service from 1959 to 1995. He also worked as a bartender, clerk, and courier, often working two or three jobs at a time in order to provide for his family. He and his wife owned and operated the Fountaintown Grocery for four and half years. Seven of their children attended Morristown schools.

Martin and his family were members of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Indianapolis and St. Michael Parish in Greenfield. He was active in his church and volunteered in the program Mothers of Preschoolers, looking after babies and toddlers.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Martin F. Hanley, Sr., and Catherine Marie (Daly) Hanley; six brothers and a sister; five sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and four nephews; and by Dorothy, his loving wife of almost forty-eight years, who died in 2005.

He is survived by his brother David M. Hanley and David’s former wife, Stella. He is also survived by his ten children and their spouses; eighteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; and thirteen nieces and nephews.
