To the editor:

I came from a farm family with deep roots in the county. I have a lot of respect for farmers. They face many issues not considered by the general or passing public.

The issue recently addressed by Mr. Mohr is road safety at intersections where tall crops block visibility ("Crop crusader," Aug. 25, Page A1). It is dangerous. One must pull out nearly into the traffic lane, in some cases, just to be able to see. The needless, fatal accident Mohr referred to, in his own words, was attributed to tall corn close to the intersection. The death impacted my daughters and their friends too.

I have an excellent solution to this problem: Simply don’t plant tall crops so close to the intersections! Mic drop. I understand cramming in bushels per acre, but when it comes to the intersections, your profits should take a back seat.

This should also include shrubbery, trees and anything else any landowner or homeowner might place near the road, or allow to grow, unchecked, until it becomes a safety issue. It’s selfish, greedy and irresponsible. Cut it. Trim it. Don’t plant it. The life you save might be one dearest to you or your own.
