Organizers cancel Beech Church homecoming
CARTHAGE — Organizers of the annual homecoming at Beech Church have canceled this year’s event, citing safety concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Each year descendants and friends of the Beech Settlement, a community of free Black people who settled in the Carthage area in the 1820s, gather on the last Sunday of August for a church service and reunion.
Last year, they also celebrated the renovation of the mid-1800s structure, named in 2016 to Indiana Landmarks’ 10 Most Endangered list. An open house the day before the service offered an extra chance to see the refurbished setting.
Organizers hope to resume the reunions in 2021.
Lord’s Acre canceled this year
McCORDSVILLE — Organizers of the local Lord’s Acre Family Festival at McCordsville United Methodist Church have canceled this year’s festival and fish fry.
“We thank everyone for their support and look forward to serving our great food again in 2021,” reads a post on the church’s website.
The church service that closes the festival weekend is still on.
“We will still celebrate the spirit of Lord’s Acre on Sunday, September 13,” the post read.
AWANA resumes Sept. 14 at Hancock Reformed Baptist
GREENFIELD — Hancock Reformed Baptist Church will resume its AWANA program for children on Sept. 14.
The groups will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays at the church, 944 E. Davis Road, Greenfield. Ages are 3 years through sixth grade.

Electronics recycling set at Mt. Lebanon UMC
GREENFIELD — Dispose of unwanted household electronics at a recycling event in September.
Technology Recyclers will accept items from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 19 at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, 3447 S. State Road 9.
CRT monitors, tube TVs, LED or LCD monitors, and LCD displays can be disposed of for $20 each.
For other items, the event is free, but donations will be accepted. Accepted items include computers, laptops, office copiers, small kitchen appliances, lawn equipment, speakers, VCRs, cables and wires, medical electronics, batteries, printers, fax machines, PDAs, DVD players, stereos, cell phones, lab equipment, microwaves, game systems and more.
Items that will not be accepted include clothing, furniture, paint, toxic chemicals, wood and tires.

Women’s study explores ‘Nice’ book
GREENFIELD — Greenfield Christian Church is offering a book/Bible study from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 10 and ending Oct. 22.
The selected book for this study is “Nice — Why We Love to be Liked and How God Calls Us to More” by Sharon Hodde Miller. Its premise is that women have been socialized to be nice with comments like “that isn’t nice” or “be a nice girl.” In their desire to be liked, women often are nice, being silent, less than genuine, or even compromising themselves to be liked.
Nedra Everett, licensed marriage and family therapist with a private practice in Carmel, will lead this study. In her 29 years of practice, she has seen the cost of this well-meaning message to “be nice” result in confusion about how to hold onto themselves and have a voice in their church, their marriage, their community, and their friendships. Building on the metaphor of a “better tree”, she will blend content, discussion, and creative activities to create space, common ground, for each woman to cultivate her own “better tree” wherever she is in her walk of faith.
This ministry is open to all women in the Greenfield area, particularly for women with young and elementary age children. Book, handouts, creative project materials will be provided at no cost. Registration by Sept. 3 will allow the church to have materials ready.

Bible institute offers classes
