To the editor:

To get the comfortable life that we lead today, our ancestors had to go through incredible hardships that we cannot imagine. The Revolutionary War, expanding across the continent while they often struggled to barely feed themselves, followed by two World wars, is a very short list of what they suffered through to get us the comfortable life that we have today.

Yet we beneficiaries of the adversity our predecessors endured cannot be bothered to wear a mask or stay out of a crowded room for as long as it takes us to defeat COVID-19.

Thank heavens that most large retail stores are helping out by forcing us to wear masks in their stores. I had begun to shop at Indianapolis stores, where they have enforced mask-wearing all along, because only about one quarter of us in Hancock County could be bothered to wear masks in stores. Now, thankfully, it’s 100%.

So, the least we can do is chip in by avoiding crowded rooms. If not for yourself, then for our kids who are already beginning to catch COVID-19 at Greenfield-Central and New Pal.

And let our leaders show some leadership, instead of whining about mask wearing. I’m looking at you, Hancock County Commissioners.
