Health Foundation grants scholarships to students pursuing healthcare

The Hancock Health Foundation has awarded a total of $61,000 in scholarships to 25 local students in medical fields of study.

The 2020 Edith Zike Nursing Scholarship recipients include: Emily Wilson, Anderson University; Paige Wickard, Eastern Hancock High School; Grace Hall, Greenfield Central High School; Audrey VanderWal, University of Indianapolis; Emma Walker, Anderson University; Maggie Smith, Ball State University; Beth Grass, Ivy Tech Community College; Chelsea Hohenberger, Purdue Global University; and Kassandra Ramirez, IUPUI. These students each received $2,000 toward their tuition.

The Foundation has awarded the 2020 John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarship to Andrea Jacobs, Ball State University. Calee Hochstedler, Ball State University also has renewed her scholarship from 2019. This scholarship will cover their entire tuition for the 2020-2021 school year. The John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarships are made possible through the generous gift from the estate of Mr. John F. Stickford. Recipients of this scholarship commit to working as a nurse in Hancock or Shelby County for each year that they receive this scholarship.

The Foundation’s School of Radiologic Technology Scholarship is awarded to individuals currently enrolled in the hospital’s School of Radiologic Technology. This year’s recipients include Sarah Burton, Tyler Funkhouser, Brittney Smith, Katherine Janes, Sydni Phelan, Hannah Glackman, Jessica Sheplavy and Kelly Marden. They each receive $1,000 toward their tuition. Allen Meyer received the $500 Richard A. Silver, MD Clinical Excellence Award for being top of the class. The School of Radiologic Technology Scholarship for Mt. Vernon High School Graduates was awarded to Heidi Ferrill, which will cover her tuition, books and fees for the full two years of the program.

The Foundation also awarded its Healthcare and Wellness Scholarship to four students. This scholarship was created to support local students and encourage entry into healthcare and wellness professions. Each student received $2,000 toward their tuition. The 2020 recipients are Tyler Kennedy, Butler University; Cheyenne Ledford, Indiana State University; Hailey Ayers, Purdue University; and Jennifer Johnston, Butler University.

The 2020 Jill Carr Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ryan Brebberman, a registered dietician working at Hancock Health. Ryan is obtaining his Master’s in Food Science and Nutrition at Colorado State University. The Jill Carr Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 by the parents of Jill Billings Peloso-Carr, who was the Director of Nutritional Services at Hancock Regional Hospital for nearly 20 years. The amount of the scholarship is $1,000.

The Hancock Health Foundation’s Scholarship programs are made possible by contributions from the community. Since 1977, the Foundation has awarded 250 scholarships totaling more than $400,000 to students in Hancock County.
