HANCOCK COUNTY — A man who was accused of burglary and theft in 2017 is now in the county jail to face the charges.

Baylee Elizalde, 22, Greenfield, has been charged with a Level 4 felony count of burglary of a dwelling and a Level 6 felony count of theft stemming from an incident in 2017.

Elizalde was arrested on a warrant over the weekend and made an initial appearance Monday, June 8, in Hancock County Circuit Court via video with Judge Scott Sirk. The judge set a $4,000 cash bond.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the Greenfield Police Department took a report in February 2017 from a man reporting a theft of items at his vacant house in the 700 block of South State Street.

A female neighbor called the owner of the house and told him she had found a box in her garage with his name on it, the report said. The box had miscellaneous belongings that the man had been keeping inside his vacant residence next door.

The owner of the house that was broken into told police he found a broken window and that the fence separating the two homes had been pushed down. The next-door neighbor was a relative of Elizalde and told the man she had been letting Elizalde stay with her.

She then told the man she thought Elizalde was responsible for the break-in and theft.

The man told police he was missing numerous items, including a $2,000 pair of speakers, among other valuables totaling some $3,200, the report noted. The woman also told police she had found several of the items the man was missing from his house in a room where Elizalde had been staying.

Elizalde, who was 18 at the time of the crimes, was listed as an inmate in the Miami Correctional Facility before being released and handed over to Hancock County officials in early June to face charges here.

Elizalde is set to have a pretrial conference Thursday, June 11. A trial date has been set for late November.
