HANCOCK COUNTY — A man accused of robbing and beating his father last fall was sentenced for his crimes earlier this week in Hancock County Superior Court 1.

Michael E. Marvin, 41, 7200 block of Buck Creek Road, was facing two Level 3 felony charges and multiple other counts. He plead guilty to three of the six charges and was given a six-year term by court commissioner Cody Coombs on Tuesday, May 26.

Coombs handed down a sentence of 2½ years for two Level 6 felonies and one year on a misdemeanor count, all to run consecutively. Three years of the sentence will be executed, and three years will be served on probation.

As part of the deal, Marvin pleaded guilty to a lesser crime, a Level 6 felony of residential entry; a Level 6 felony county of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of intimidation. A Level 3 felony count of robbery resulting in injury and two other misdemeanor charges were dropped as part of the agreement.

Marvin was also ordered to undergo substance abuse evaluation. Deputy prosecutor Kevin Kelly said prosecutors reached the agreement after listening to the wishes of the victim, Marvin’s father.

Kelly, however, argued for more time to be served than what the family had sought, and the court agreed, ensuring Marvin will spend time behind bars and get the help he needs.

Marvin has been in the county jail since his arrest in early October 2019.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the charges stemmed from a confrontation on Sept. 30, 2019, at a home in the 7200 block of Buck Creek Road.

The affidavit stated Richard Marvin, Michael E. Marvin’s father, reported his son came over to pick up a blanket and $20. Richard Marvin says his son beat and choked him when he refused to give Michael Marvin more money.
