NEW PALESTINE — A child struck by a car Sunday afternoon was transported to Riley Hospital for Children with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a report from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident happened around 1:50 p.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of South County Road 450W.

The 10-year-old boy was apparently chasing a dog when he ran into the street from behind another car and was struck. The accident left the child briefly unresponsive, said Capt. Robert Harris, the sheriff’s department’s public information officer.

The driver of the car was not charged.

“The child ran out from behind another car without looking, so the driver had no way to see the child or stop in time,” Harris said.

Several witnesses at the scene told deputies the driver was not speeding.

First-responders from the Sugar Creek and Buck Creek township fire departments, along with officers from the sheriff’s Department and New Palestine Police Department responded to the accident.

Tony Bratcher, public information officer for Sugar Creek department, said the incident is a reminder that with the weather getting warmer, more people are outside and more outdoor activities are taking place.

“So, extra attention and reduced speeds could save lives and property,” Bratcher said.
