GREENFIELD — Earlier this week, officials learned a man wanted on a warrant in Marion County for theft was at a Greenfield address. Police moved to arrest him and ended up charging him with several drug crimes in Hancock County.

Matthew Alexander Guzman, 21, 900 block of West Fifth Street, Greenfield, has been charged with a Level 5 felony count of dealing marijuana with a prior conviction; a Level 6 felony charge of unlawful possession of a syringe; a Level 6 felony charge of possession of marijuana with a prior offense; and a Class A misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Guzman was behind a closed door when police arrived at the home. When he finally emerged, officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the room.

A search of the room produced a bag containing material consistent with spice weighing 9.8 grams; two used syringes; and a backpack with three individual plastic bags containing marijuana, the affidavit said.

Officers also found a digital scale and other material that led officers to conclude Guzman was selling the drugs, the affidavit said. Approximate total weight of all marijuana in the backpack was 46 grams.

Guzman made his initial appearance in Hancock County Circuit Court on Tuesday, March 3, where a public defender was appointed to represent him and a cash bond was set at $2,000 by Judge Scott Sirk.

Guzman has a pretrial conference set for May. He is no longer listed as an inmate at the Hancock County Jail, and he also was not listed as an inmate in Marion County.
