GREENFIELD — The city will hold its heavy-item pickup days during April this year.

For residents east of State Road 9, items must be placed on the curb by 8 a.m. April 16. Pickups will be conducted April 16-18. For residents west of State Road 9, items must be placed on the curb by 8 a.m. April 23, and pickups will be conducted April 23-25.

Residents are welcome to leave out large items they need to dispose of like furniture, mattresses or water heaters. Unapproved items include trash or trash bags of any kind, wet paint, building materials (such as drywall, wood or tile), TVs or computer monitors, tree limbs, tires and batteries.

The name change from heavy “trash” pickup to heavy “item” pickup is intended to clear up confusion, street commissioner Tyler Rankins said.

“That ‘trash’ throws a lot of people off, because we actually don’t take trash,” Rankins said.

Rankins said extending the pickup period to three days should help defray the workload for city employees.

“We have 40 guys out there, every truck, every loader, every backhoe in the city, we have them out here,” he said. “I think we picked up 280 tons last year. It takes time, so we’re hoping those three days will help with the overtime a little bit.”
