To the editor:

I just finished reading the excellent coverage of Nick Gulling’s life and careers ("Late sheriff remembered for a half-century of dedication to public safety," Page A1, Feb. 18). Being his next-door neighbor for many years, I can reflect on many of the occasions that were mentioned in your coverage. There were hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of iced-teas or Tabs that were consumed in our family room bar, along with Denny and Judy Fisk. One cannot imagine how many stories were shared over that bar over the years.

Nick used our pool for therapy when he was threatened with back surgery, which I don’t think he ever had to have. Nick took us in his emergency vehicle to Charlottesville when I first got word that my father had passed with a heart attack.

I am privileged to have had him as a dear friend and neighbor, and I will cherish all those memories forever.
