Royals bounce back with MEC win

The Eastern Hancock girls basketball team rebounded from its loss on Monday with a Mid-Eastern Conference win over Randolph Southern 48-34 on Tuesday night.

The Royals lost to Pendleton Heights 66-53 on the road the night prior, but against the host Rebels it was different story.

Eastern Hancock trailed 24-20 at halftime before outscoring Randolph Southern 28-10 in the second half to improve its season record to 13-8 and 7-2 in the MEC.

Skyla Smith led the Royals with 11 points and six rebounds. Caroline Stapleton and Aly Spaulding both scored nine points. Grace Stapleton had seven points.

Jocelyn Duncan and Emma Bolding both added five points each.

Chloe O’Neal had six rebounds with three steals. Grace Stapleton pushed the offense with seven assists and had three steals. Caroline Stapleton had two blocked shots.

Marauders win 20th consecutive game

The Class 4A eighth-ranked Mt. Vernon girls basketball team battled on Tuesday night to keep its streak alive.

Entering the evening against Hoosier Heritage Conference foe New Castle with a 19-game winning streak, the host Marauders ran out a 24-16 lead after the first quarter but saw their advantage close and evaporate until the end.

The Trojans hung tight, narrowing the gap 36-34 by halftime. New Castle later took the lead 53-52 after three quarters.

The Marauders answered with a 20-point fourth quarter while holding the Trojans to nine points to win in the end, 72-62.

The victory pushed Mt. Vernon’s program-record winning streak to 20 straight games and improved its overall record to 21-1. The Marauders are 6-0 in the HHC, guaranteeing at least a share of the league title with New Palestine (6-1), but they can win the title outright with a win over Delta tonight.

Cougars drop second straight game

The Greenfield-Central girls basketball lost its second consecutive game with a 48-40 loss against HHC rival Yorktown on the road.

The Cougars are 10-11 on the season and 3-4 in the conference.

Greenfield-Central trailed against Yorktown 27-14 after the first half, but they charged back by outscoring the Tigers 26-21 in the second half.

Hannah Farrell led the Cougars with 13 points and added six rebounds with four assists. Addie Hill had eight rebounds and four points.

Crystal Peterson finished with 10 points, a pair of 3-pointers and three rebounds.

Gymnastics

New Palestine beats Morristown

The New Palestine gymnastics team swept all four events Tuesday night to beat Morristown 99.35-83.425.

Grace Shanahan was first in the all-around (35.1), with Kennedy Garrett second (32.475) and Emma Poag fourth (30.525).

Shanahan won three of the four events, while Garrett won on vault.

On floor exercise, Shanahan won with an 8.725. Addie Halter was second (8.475) and Garrett fourth.

On uneven bars, Shanahan tallied 9.0 to win. Garrett was second (8.0) and Alyse Rickey third (7.7). Poag was fourth.

On vault, Garrett won with a score of 8.25. Shanahan was third (8.275) and Poag fourth.

On balance beam, Shanahan won with a score of 9.1. Halter and Garrett tied for second (8.125). Rickey was fourth.
