HANCOCK COUNTY — A woman who came to the Hancock County Courthouse for a drug screen is now in jail after she was accused of trying to cheat the system by sneaking in someone else’s urine.

Mary Jane Bryant, 27, Greenwood, has been charged with a Class B misdemeanor count of possession of a device or substance used to interfere with a screening. The charge is punishable by up to $1,000 in fines and 180 days in jail.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Bryant arrived at the Hancock County Courthouse for a meeting at the probation department on Thursday, Jan. 23.

A sheriff’s deputy noticed Bryant, who was sitting in the waiting area for her drug test, was nodding off. When the deputy approached Bryant, she woke up, but she appeared to be groggy and her eyes were glassy, the affidavit said. Bryant’s speech was slurred, the deputy said in the report.

The woman denied she was under the influence.

Officials went ahead and conducted a drug screen test on Bryant and that’s when authorities learned she had smuggled a bottle of someone else’s urine with the intent to substitute it to pass the test, the affidavit said.

According to court records, Bryant was on probation on two Level 6 felony charges, including possession of methamphetamine, stemming from an incident in October 2018.

That probation was revoked on Friday, Jan. 24, according to records.

Bryant was set to have an initial hearing Monday, Jan. 27, on the new charge against her in Hancock County Superior Court 2 in front of Judge Dan Marshall.

She was ordered held without bond and was still listed as an inmate in the jail Tuesday, Jan. 28.
