Marauders ranked ninth in latest IBCA poll

The Mt. Vernon girls basketball team is rewriting history this season. With its 19th-straight win this past Friday night over rival Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon is currently riding a school-record winning streak and improved to 5-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

Winners headline IBCA POY honors list

As the boys’ season is in full-swing and the girls’ season begins to wind down, several players throughout this basketball-rich state are finishing strong and posting outstanding performances on a regular basis.

The Week 12 awards are highlighted by a pair of repeat winners in Merrillville junior Keon Thompson and West Lafayette Harrison senior Sydney Jacobsen.

Lafayette Jefferson junior Brooks Barnhizer, North Harrison junior Langdon Hatton, Hammond Noll junior Courtney Blakely and Triton Central senior Rylie Stephens were also selected as recipients for the week of Jan. 20-25 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Thompson and Blakely are the boys’ and girls’ winners, respectively, in District-1. Barnhizer takes the boys’ honor in District-2, while Jacobsen takes the girls’ honor in District-2. Hatton is the District-3 boys’ recipient, and Stephens is the District-3 girls’ recipient.

Gutgsell to be honored with IHSAA Award

Kurt Gutgsell of WBDC Radio and WJTS TV 18 in Jasper will be presented the 2019-20 IHSAA Distinguished Media Service Award for District 3.

Gutgsell’s contributions to education-based athletics will be recognized in Huntingburg on Friday night when the Southridge Raiders host the Forest Park Rangers in boys basketball. IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox and Sports Information Director Jason Wille will make the presentation.

Kurt is in his 30th year as sports director at WBDC Radio, a Dubois County Broadcasting Company station, and has also served as sports director, anchor and play-by-play broadcaster for WJTS TV 18 since 1993.
