Book club to discuss ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

GREENFIELD — Sharon Livingston will lead a discussion of Margaret Atwood’s bestselling novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 14, at the Hancock County Public Library, 900 W. McKenzie Road. Originally published in 1985, this dystopian novel explores themes of subjugated women in a patriarchal society and the various means by which these women resist and attempt to gain individuality and independence. “The Handmaid’s Tale” won the 1985 Governor General’s Award and the first Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1987. It has since been made into a television series on HULU. Sign up at hcplibrary.org or 317-462-5141, ext. 240. Participants are encouraged to read the book in advance. Love INC, Homemakers partner for classes

GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Extension Homemakers and Love INC partner to offer a variety of I CAN classes throughout the month of January. “I CAN Cook With a Microwave” is on Jan. 13; on January 20 the topic is “I CAN Budget My $” and on Jan. 27, the topic is I CAN Build My Resume and Interview Skills.” All classes are free and open to the public from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays at the Bethel Baptist Church, 1610 S. Homemakers offer bread making class

GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Extension Homemakers announce a lesson on bread making at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 14 at the Hancock Extension Office, 802 N. Apple St. The public is invited to attend. State Fair award-winning bread maker Debbi Green will lead the workshop. Green will demonstrate some of her techniques, ingredient suggestions and bread recipes.
