The New Palestine girls basketball team charged back from a late deficit on Saturday to defeat Yorktown 50-42 on the road.

The Dragons outscored the host Tigers 17-6 in the final quarter to seize the Hoosier Heritage Conference victory.

Trailing 36-33 going into the final eight minutes, Michaela Jones opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game. The Dragons then built their lead, as both Jones and Jordan Reid scored five points each in the final frame.

Addi Jones and Isabella Gizzi scored fourth-quarter baskets, and Grace Marshall hit three free throws to help seal the game.

The Dragons trailed 12-7 after a quarter and 22-19 at halftime. A 14-point third quarter helped keep the Dragons close, with Reid scoring six points in the frame and Michaela Jones draining a 3-pointer.

Reid led the way with 17 points. Marshall and Michaela Jones scored 13 points each.

The Dragons are now 12-4 on the season and 5-1 in HHC play.

Royals drop

second straight

The Eastern Hancock girls basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t catch up against Greenwood on Saturday, losing 52-36.

Host Class 4A Greenwood led 17-15 at halftime and outscored the 2A Royals 35-21 in the second half to win.

Eastern Hancock dropped to 9-5 on the season with three loses in the past five games after winning three straight.

Grace Stapleton led the Royals with 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting, including three 3-pointers. She added three rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Caroline Stapleton had five rebounds and two points. Chloe O’Neal finished with six points and a team-best seven rebounds. Jocelyn Duncan had six points.

New Palestine falls

in overtime to Shenandoah

The New Palestine boys basketball team suffered a narrow 74-73 loss in overtime Saturday night at Class 2A No. 3 Shenandoah.

The Dragons’ Maximus Gizzi stole a pass on Shenandoah’s final possession of regulation to send the game to OT tied 65-65, but the host Raiders hit 7 of 10 from the line in the extra session.

Shenandoah took two three-point leads, but each was answered by a driving shot by Gizzi.

With 30 seconds left, NP fouled and Shenandoah hit one free throw to go up 73-71. Gizzi responded with a driving shot with 10 seconds left to tie the game, but Shenandoah guard Jakeb Kinsey went coast-to-coast and drew a foul with 4.6 seconds left. He hit one free throw to give his team the lead. Gizzi went coast-to-coast and got to the rim in traffic, drawing contact, but the shot fell off.

Gizzi scored 31 points to lead the Dragons, tying his career high.

Dawson Eastes added 14 points. Matthew Brown scored eight points, as did Blaine Nunnally. Eric Roudebush and Steele Brasfield scored six each.

short in Richmond

The New Palestine boys basketball team staged a fourth-quarter rally Friday at Richmond, but it fell short in a 60-55 loss to the host Red Devils.

The Dragons trailed 42-36 going into the fourth, but cut the deficit to 52-51 before Richmond hit a shot and then six straight free throws to put the game away.

Maximus Gizzi tallied 24 points. He was 5-for-6 from the line, all in the final period. Dawson Eastes scored 12 points. Eric Roudebush added seven points. Blaine Nunnally had six points. Matthew Brown tallied four points and Steele Brasfield two.
