Yamaha made plans to build propeller plant  in Greenfield

An Indianapolis company that makes propellers for water craft sets its sights on making Greenfield home.

Yamaha Marine Precision Propellers Inc. announced to move part of its manufacturing operations from the east side of Indianapolis to Greenfield, investing more than $18 million and bringing 81 jobs to the city, the company’s general manager, Jonathon Burns, told the Greenfield City Council.

Yamaha began construction on a 50,000 square-foot building in the fall of 2019 on 28 acres of land in the 1600 block of West New Road in Greenfield, just north of Lark Ranch.

Man arrested in rape of woman, 91

A man law enforcement officials describe as a violent sexual predator is arrested and charged with raping two elderly women living in retirement communities, including one in June 2018 in McCordsville.

Samuel L. Patterson, 56, Indianapolis, was linked the McCordsville casee after he was arrested and charged with a similar attack on a 77-year-old woman in Lawrence.

He was convicted in the Lawrence attack in the fall of 2019 and still faces charges in the Hancock County attack. Police said the suspect entered the McCordsville woman’s home late at night at attacked her.

Skeletal remains found in wooded area

Local and state officials worked to solve the mystery of whose skeletal remains were lying in a wooded area in McCordsville until a mushroom hunter stumbled across them on April 27. 

The remains were identified through dental records five months later as Patricia Dipasquale, 57, of McCordsville who had been missing since 2017. 

The cause of death is still a mystery. The condition of the remains made it difficult to determine exactly how Dipasquale died, the Hancock County coroner’s office said. However, foul play is not suspected.

Plane crash couple from Nevada

Two people are killed on impact when their small jet crashed on May 22 into a farm field just east of Indianapolis Regional Airport.

The plane had just made a refueling stop at the airport and took off around 12:40 p.m. The pilot, 75-year-old Robert Walter Holman Jr., and his wife, 61-year-old wife Robin Lynch Holman, died in the crash. The couple was from Incline Village, Nevada.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are still investigating.

Greenfield man arrested after SWAT standoff

A Greenfield man holds law enforcement at bay for 14 hours during a standoff June 8.

Jacobi M. Cavaletto, 36, 200 block of North Jaycie Phelps Road, barred himself in a barn on the property and refused to come out, police said Members of the county’s SWAT team closed off the area and tried to negotiate with him. At one point, gunshots could be heard, apparently coming from inside the barn, and the officers scattered for cover.

Caveletto emerged 14 hours later and was arrested. He faces multiple felony counts. He has a pretrial conference set for Jan. 15, 2020, and a trial is pending for Feb. 3. 

U.S. 40 construction reduces number of lanes

The Indiana Department of Transportation begins construction in late June on a resurfacing and redesign of U.S. 40 on the west side of Greenfield.

INDOT changed the road from four lanes to three. There is now one lane in each direction for traffic, a center turning lane and designated bike lanes.

The concept is called a road diet. INDOT, citing crash statistics, said the the alignment is safer. But residents who responded on social media, in interviews and in letters to the editor were largely against it.

Six officers go to hospital after drug exposure

Six law enforcement officers are sent to the hospital to be examined as a precaution to drug exposure after the arrest of a man June 26 in Fortville. The incident involved SWAT officers and hazardous materials handlers from several different agencies before it was settled peacefully.

David Andrew Graham, 26, Portage, was taken into custody by the Hancock County Joint Tactical SWAT team without incident.

The Fortville Police Department was called to Stonecrest Apartments in the 600 block of Madison Street by Graham’s girlfriend, who said he was threatening to kill everyone in the apartment complex and that Graham wanted to engage the police, Knauer said.

The woman told police there were drugs in the apartment and that in addition to threatening her, Graham also had a warrant out for his arrest in Porter County. In the end, Graham was charged with a Level 6 felony county of possession of methamphetamine and given a 230-day sentence.
