GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Commissioners voted on Tuesday, Dec. 17, to approve the purchase of new radios for the police departments of Shirley, Wilkinson and New Palestine, as well as for the Hancock County Highway Department.

John Jokantas, director of communications at the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center, said the Motorola radios will allow police to more easily contact the 911 center or fire departments. The total cost of the radio replacements will be $108,949.

The funds will come from the county’s 2019 general obligation bond. The $5 million bond, paid for by property taxes, can be used for equipment and capital improvements needs not related to the construction of the county’s new jail building.
