In 2011, Mt. Vernon High School cheerleaders won a state title in the coed team division in the Indiana Cheerleading Association state championships at New Castle.

In 1990, voters cast ballots in various races, including Indiana secretary of state. Greenfield-Central graduates were involved on both sides of that campaign. Dave Arland of the Class of 1981 was campaign spokesman for Indianapolis Mayor Bill Hudnut, the Republican candidate; Mike O’Connor of the Class of 1982 was campaign coordinator for Democrat Joe Hogsett. Hogsett won the election. Today, he is mayor of Indianapolis.

In 1911, Socialists defeated the Citizens’ ticket in Shirley town elections. Lee Ayers was elected trustee, Noble Van Meter was elected treasurer, John Pusinelli was elected clerk, and Nehemiah Dean was elected marshal. Dean enjoyed the largest margin of victory, edging his opponent by 63 votes.
In 1973, a fund was established to raise money to buy a handmade desk that had belonged to Reuben Riley to place in the Riley Home.
In 1995, Pat Elmore was elected mayor of Greenfield, the first (and so far only) woman to hold that office.

In 1912, a freight train switching a car struck and killed an 83-year-old Greenfield woman at the East Street crossing of the Pennsylvania Railroad. She was returning to her home after delivering a basket of fruit to a friend. Friends and family said the woman was hard of hearing and had had close calls in the past.

In 2016, former Hancock County resident Kevin Duane “Yogi” Ferrell Jr. made his National Basketball Association debut for the Brooklyn Nets, coming off the bench to contribute five points in a 110-96 loss to the New York Knicks. The former Indiana University star later signed with the Dallas Mavericks and, in July 2018, joined the Sacramento Kings.

In 1954, Maxwell School convened at 2:30 p.m. for a night-session school day designed to allow parents more opportunity to visit the school. The event was planned to coincide with American Education Week. Classes dismissed at 8 p.m. Because of that late dismissal, the school day began one hour later the next day.
In 1987, Hancock County Democrats filed a request to recount votes in a Greenfield City Council race that saw Republican incumbent Joyce McClain win by five votes over Democratic challenger Gary Evans. Ten days later, Hancock Superior Judge Richard Payne dismissed the motion for a recount, indicating Democrats had not met legal requirements for filing the request.

In 2008, the Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal opened at Indianapolis International Airport, honoring the World War I flying ace who was born in Wilkinson. Cook died March 25, 1943, in the South Pacific during World War II. He was 50.
