McCORDSVILLE — More than $800,000 in road improvements is coming to McCordsville next year, including two remaining stretches of Mt. Comfort Road that haven’t been tended to recently.

Indiana’s Next Level Roads: Community Crossings Initiative awarded the town $633,035.24. McCordsville provided a 25% match, resulting in a total of $844,047.

Ryan Crum, director of planning and building for McCordsville, said the town submitted applications for five projects to the grant program.

“We got all five, which is awesome,” he said.

One of the projects is the repaving of two sections of Mt. Comfort Road — between Broadway and County Road 750N as well as between 650N and just north of 500N. Crum said they’re the last two stretches of the major thoroughfare in the town that haven’t been repaved over the last few years.

Other projects include milling and repaving County Road 750N between 700W and North Kensington Way, all of 700N in the town’s limits and a couple streets in Highland Springs, McCordsville’s oldest neighborhood.

The repaving projects total about 3 miles of road, Crum said.

Community Crossings funding will also fund slurry seal improvements on four streets in town. Slurry seal is a mix of water, asphalt emulsion, aggregate and additives applied to an existing asphalt surface.

Crum said all of the projects will take place during the next construction season.

“We’re really pleased with the grant announcement,” he said. “Community Crossings has been a great program that the state runs for local governments. It’s been really helpful and beneficial to our residents.”

McCordsville is responsible for about 42 miles of road, Crum said.

The town was the only community in Hancock County to receive funding through Community Crossings’ latest round.

McCordsville’s award is part of $99.2 million the program is distributing to 229 Indiana cities, towns and counties, according to an Indiana Department of Transportation news release. The latest round drew more applications than available funding, making the call for projects very competitive, the release adds.

INDOT accepts applications in January and July and places a $1 million annual cap per community. The department estimates $100 million will be available in the January 2020 call for projects.

Community Crossings has provided more than $612 million in state matching funds for road improvement projects.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb said in the release that high-quality roads and bridges are part of the state’s formula for economic development and strong communities.

“Our fully-funded Next Level Roads plan and record-breaking level of construction has gained Indiana national recognition for our approach to infrastructure, and Community Crossings takes that commitment to the local level all across the state,” Holcomb said.

The program requires a 50 percent match from larger communities and 25 percent from smaller ones from funding sources approved for road and bridge construction.

Indiana lawmakers earmarked long-term Community Crossings funding through legislation Holcomb signed in 2017.

State Sen. Mike Crider, R-Greenfield said in a statement that he’s eager to see the positive impact the award will have in the town.

“I commend local officials for their efforts in securing this funding to help our community continue to be a great place to live and raise a family,” Crider said.
