Boys soccer

Cougars go 2-1 at Classic

Greenfield-Central competed in the Great Midwest Classic on Friday and Saturday, finishing with a 2-1 record to improve their season mark to 8-1-0.

They opened play on Friday night against McCutcheon, picking up a narrow 2-1 win. Zack Bell scored in the 20th minute off an assist from John Halvorsen and Caleb Mundell scored off a Jordan Phillips assists halfway through the second half to give the Cougars a two-goal cushion. McCutcheon scored right before the final whistle.

The Cougars’ first loss of the season came in the Saturday morning game against Highland Park. Greenfield-Central dropped a physical match, 1-0, on a 59th-minute goal by Highland Park.

They rebounded with a win against Downers Grove, 3-1. Jackson Findley gave the Cougars an early lead off an assist from Bell, but Downers Grove tied it just four minutes later. Bell scored on a penalty kick and Jason Scrivner added another, off an assist from Mundell, to round out the first-half scoring.

Girls soccer

Dragons draw with Roncalli

New Palestine played to a 0-0 draw Saturday at Roncalli.

Goalkeeper Whitney Miller made eight saves, posting her first career varsity shutout.

The Dragons (5-3-2) are back in action Wednesday at Greenfield-Central, with the varsity-only contest beginning at 7 p.m.

Cougars top Triton Central

Greenfield-Central rolled past Triton Central on Saturday, picking up a 7-2 win on the road.

The Cougars moved to 6-2 on the season prior to Monday’s match against Greenwood and will face New Palestine on Wednesday.

Marauders edge Yorktown

Mt. Vernon defeated Yorktown 4-2 in a shootout on Saturday.

After a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation and both overtimes, Anna Isger, Maddie Swingle, Riley Hurst and Shay Shipley all converted in the shootout. Goalkeeper Alex Overshiner made two saves to secure the win for the Marauders.

Volleyball

Dragons finish 2nd at invite

New Palestine finished as the runner-up in Saturday’s Greenwood Invitational, going 2-1 on the day.

The Dragons went 2-0 in pool play, starting with a 27-25, 25-22 victory over Scecina. New Palestine then won 25-9, 25-11 over Edinburgh. In the championship match, the Dragons fell 25-18, 16-25, 15-12 to Monrovia.

The Dragons are now 8-4 on the season.

Cougars fall to champs

Greenfield-Central took on defending state champion New Castle on Saturday, falling on the road, 25-19, 25-11, 25-17.

The Cougars are next in action Tuesday against county rival Mt. Vernon.

Marauders split tough matches

Mt. Vernon had a 1-1 day on Saturday, topping Westfield, 3-0, before falling to Hamilton Southeastern, 0-3.

The Marauders narrowly edged Westfield in the first two sets, 27-25 and 26-24 before taking momentum and winning the final set 25-10.

They stayed close to HSE for the first set, losing 25-22, before falling 25-10 and 25-18 in the second and third sets.

Cross-country

Marauders boys, girls win

The Mt. Vernon boys and girls teams both ran away to big wins at Saturday’s Randolph Southern Invitational, with the boys scoring 35 points to finish 112 points ahead of runner-up Yorktown, and the girls scoring 63 points to top runner-up Muncie Central (127). Eastern Hancock’s boys also competed, finishing fourth with 173 points.

The Marauders boys had five top-10 finishes, led by Tyler Strantz in third. Reyce Morgan was fifth and Evan Rappe, Collin Brown and Austin Rush finished eighth through 10th. Eastern Hancock was led by a seventh-place finish from Nick Edwards.

The Mt. Vernon girls had two top-10 finishes, with Melinda Cornelius finishing ninth and Rilee Hartman coming in 10th.

Dragons girls win at Whiteland

New Palestine girls cross-country team won the Whiteland Invitational Saturday, placing six runners in the top 20 and tallying 29 points.

Brenna Shaw won the individual championship, with Emma Mann finishing third and posting her personal-best time, Kaylin Casner fourth and Kendall Mann seventh. Emily Adam was 14th. Caitlin Urrutia also had a personal best with an 18th-place finish.

The Dragon boys were second. Devon Whitaker finished third and Carson Sams 16th to lead the Dragons. They ran their career-bests, as did Hayden Isaacs, Owen Kleine, Conner Lapenta and Will Hahn.

Cougars compete at meets

Greenfield-Central’s boys competed Saturday at Ben Davis, while the girls competed at Cascade.

The boys finished ninth, led by a 16th-place finish from Conner Kinnaman. The girls finished fourth, with Audrey Brinkruff winning the individual championship in 18:58:06.
